An official image by the CW revealed Tyler Hoechlin’s first appearance as Superman. Hoechlin joins the cast of Supergirl for the upcoming second season.

Fans may recognise Hoechlin for his roles in Teen Wolf and Road to Perdition. Superman was only featured in brief shots for previous episodes and it was nothing more than a blurry image or silhouette. Now Hoechlin will bring Kal-El/Clark Kent to life in television. His first appearance will be in the start of the new season as Superman visits National City to see his cousin, Kara.

The new costume is a great mix of both old and new with inspiration coming from Reign of Superman (mid-90’s), the New 52 version, 2011 redesign, and Injustice: Gods Among Us. Of course, the classic blue and red colour scheme remains with the beloved “S” present.

Hoechlin was interviewed at Comic-Con International in San Diego where comparisons were made between Henry Cavill’s portrayal and his own take on Superman.

No definite explanation has been given on why Superman is visiting National City. One can easily speculate it’s because of the mysterious Kryptonian escape pod crash-landing. This occurred on the outskirts of the city.  Krypton was experiencing great turmoil with an uprising. The pod crashed near National City only hours within the uprising ending.  After these events, the Kryptonian mind-control satellite no longer had an influence over Earth.

Kiersten Ronning is the creative mind behind the Superman costume. She is also the costume designer for Supergirl.

The second season of Supergirl will begin airing on Monday, October 10th. The second season airs on the CW.

What are your thoughts on Tyler Hoechlin playing Superman? Do you like the design of the suit?
