Mr. Hikaru Sulu (played by actor John Cho in the current Star Trek films) will be revealed as gay in Star Trek Beyond, the third instalment in the on-going series of Star Trek films. This will make Sulu the first gay character in any Star Trek film.

As well as following his continuing story as a member of the USS Enterprise, Sulu is shown in Beyond as a father with a same-sex partner and a daughter. However, it’s said to be just there and is done very casually, something Cho himself appreciated.

Cho said:

“I liked the approach, which was not to make a big thing out of it. [That] is where I hope we are going as a species, to not politicize one’s personal orientations.”

The change was made as a nod by fellow star (and writer) Simon Pegg and director Justin Lin to actor George Takei, the first actor to play the role of Sulu, who didn’t officially come out until 2005.

Star Trek Beyond is scheduled for release on July 22nd, 2016.

Thoughts on this news? Are you looking forward to seeing more of Sulu in Star Trek Beyond?
