James Cameron (Avatar, Terminator, Aliens, Titanic) has announced that his Avatar film (2009) will be getting four sequels, instead of just three as previously announced.

Cameron made the announcement at CinemaCon 2016 during the 20th Century Fox panel. He is quoted as saying the following on the preparation work for the sequels:

“The stuff that’s been developed is really far beyond the first film.”

All four sequels are planned for Christmas-time releases in 2018, 2020, 2022 and 2023 respectively. They will all be standalone but also connect in the larger world.

New concept art was shown at the panel giving attendees a look at new creatures, vehicles and Pandora.
