Disney and Lucasfilm revealed ahead of production on Star Wars: The Force Awakens that it would feel “old school” with a focus on practical effects and using film (which director J.J. Abrams felt very strongly about as well). Following his success with 2015’s Jurassic World, Colin Trevorrow has been tasked with directing Episode IX and he’s determined to keep this focus.
Trevorrow is quoted as saying the following:
” I could never shoot Star Wars on anything but [film] because it’s a period film: It happened a long time ago!”
He also mentioned his desire to shoot scenes in space by saying:
“I asked the question, ‘Is it possible for us to shoot IMAX film plates in actual space for Star Wars, and I haven’t gotten an answer yet, but they’ve shot IMAX in space!”
Star Wars Episode IX is scheduled for release sometime in 2019.
