Today marked the three year anniversary of our Everything Geek Podcast. It still feels like yesterday that three of us (Graham, Dan and I) were sitting down to record our first podcast. A lot has changed with the podcast since then but the intentions are still the same. We started off wanting to bring content we thought fellow geeks would enjoy including guest interviews from your favourite films, TV shows etc. and three years on we’re still doing that (more regularly than when we started).
On a more personal level, I decided to set up the podcast originally for two main reasons. The reasons were:
- I saw that there were a lot of podcasts out there focusing on one franchise but very few (at the time) that focused on numerous films, TV shows and anything else in the geek community. I myself was part of a Star Wars podcast at the time and I knew how many other Star Wars podcasts were out there as well.
- I’ve always enjoyed challenging myself and I thought that creating a geek podcast would be a great challenge for me. I had no idea how much starting up this podcast would change my life. The thing I can say though is that I continue to be challenged and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
The Amazing Spider-Man actor Leif Gantvoort was the first guest we interviewed on that first episode of the podcast. Since then we’ve branched out into interviewing guests from many different themes and we’ll continue to do so in order to appeal to all of the fans that we can. We’re only halfway through the year and I already think this has been one of our best years for guests so far. Some of the highlight guests so far this year include Captain America’s Crossbones actor Frank Grillo, former The Walking Dead showrunner Glen Mazarra, Gotham star Cory Michael Smith, the man behind Colossus in the Deadpool movie Stefan Kapicic and Pokémon star Haven Paschall. Guests like these show that we’re starting to get more and more bigger names on the podcasts and we expect that this is a trend that will continue the longer we go on.
Also on the guests front- we’ll be working more with networks (and other companies) to help bring you more interviews that you’ll want to hear. We recently worked with Fox to book the interview with Cory Michael Smith and we’re working with DreamWorks to arrange our interview with Dragons: Race to the Edge showrunners Douglas Sloan and Art Edler Brown (announced as part of our three year anniversary celebrations).
We’re only halfway through the year and we’ve already had lots of great guests on the podcast this year. It makes you wonder who will be joining us before the end of the year. Only time will tell. I can tell you that we’re already in talks with a couple of very exciting guests for next year though.
Looking forward in terms of other content: We’re completely dedicated to posting news articles, reviews etc. However, as we’re a podcast our priority is obviously to promote our content (like the interviews which we do frequently) but we do our best to stay on top of the news. I haven’t been on top of things recently because I keep trying to bring in articles from the past (weeks or months ago) that I think would be good to discuss. From now on I’m just going to focus on articles as they come in or during the week so I don’t keep looking backwards. Doing this will also give me more time to work on other material for the podcast. This method might mean we lose out on discussing important topics from earlier in the year but I think it’s necessary that we stay in the moment as we go forward.
One of the things I’m looking forward to posting soon is the articles from featured cosplayers who will be acting as guest contributors on the website. This is something I’m looking forward to as well because I think that there isn’t enough focus on websites like ours about what goes into a cosplay so I’m looking forward to learning more from our guest contributors as much as you are.
We’re also planning to start video-game walkthroughs and recordings of our Everything Geek Comic Cast companion podcast very soon. In addition to the merchandise reviews on our YouTube channel we’ll be starting reviews of comics on the channel (in addition to other types of reviews on the channel potentially).
One last thing I want to say is that I’ll be attending several conventions in the next few months. If you see me be sure to stop me and introduce yourself. Click on this link for an article on the conventions I’m planning to attend this year.
I hope you’ve enjoyed our three year anniversary celebrations and all of the content we’ve posted today. We’ve grown a lot since our anniversary celebrations last year and hopefully we’ll be a lot bigger by this time next year as well.
Let me know what your suggestions are for the future of the podcast and the website.
Your founder,
Ruari Williamson
