Report- Final Wolverine Movie to Have a Mythic Quality

EGP Website Article Image 817

Simon Kinberg has become the go-to producer/screenwriter for a number of franchises, most notably X-Men and Star Wars, but Hugh Jackman’s final Wolverine movie (coming in 2017) will be one of the most important productions he has worked on yet.

Jackman has been adamant in the news that the script is perfect and includes things fans of Wolverine want to see. Kinberg is quoted as saying the following on the script:

“We’re pretty close to a script that everyone’s excited about, and I don’t know when the start date is, but we won’t start until it’s ready to shoot. What Hugh said to you is the attitude we all have—myself, Lauren Shuler Donner, the studio, [director] James Mangold, Hutch Parker—all of us, feel like this is six or seven or eight (depending on how you count) movies in the making, and there are few characters in the history of cinema who have cast as big a shadow as Wolverine, so to tell the final chapter of that story, it has to be the best, and it has to have a mythic quality to it. So we have to get it right, and I think we will, and my experience working with Jim Mangold, I’ve been extraordinarily impressed with him. He’s just a really great storyteller; he’s incredible with character. Really diligent, just a special talent. I have very high hopes for that movie.”

Kinberg also confirmed that Jackman’s ideas for the movie are indeed part of the script.

Hugh Jackman’s final Wolverine solo film is scheduled for release on March 3rd, 2017.

Star Wars Rebels Episode Review- “The Future of the Force”

EGP Website Review Image 207

The latest episode of Star Wars: Rebels sees a showdown with Ahsoka Tano and the new Inquisitors (Fifth Brother and Seventh Sister), as well as a plot-line that is very similar to the Star Wars: The Clone Wars episode “Children of the Force”.

In the Star Wars: The Clone Wars episode “Children of the Force”, Ahsoka Tano and Anakin Skywalker stop the Sith from kidnapping force-sensitive babies to create more dark-side users. In this episode, we see Ezra Bridger, Kanan Jarrus and Zeb Orrelios helping Ahsoka to stop the Inquisitors from completing a similar plan. As a fan of The Clone Wars since the beginning, I immediately felt that the plot was similar and really appreciated Ahsoka alluding to that in the episode.

That said, unlike “Children of the Force” which attempted to do too much (in my opinion) this episode flowed really well and worked just as nicely.

With only a smaller group of Rebels involved (Ezra, Kanan, Zeb and Ahsoka), I think it helped show how strong the new Inquisitors really are. Previously Ezra, Sabine and Zeb only just about escaped from them but this episode gave us a bigger insight into their strength and they eventually overpowered Ezra, Kanan and Zeb, meaning Ahsoka had to rescue them and protect the force-sensitive babies. If I’m being honest, while the lightsaber battle with Ahsoka and Fifth Brother/Seventh Sister was well done I was hoping it would be longer, but it was still good for the length of time it lasted.

Random note: Fifth Brother really was defeated far too easily in the battle though. The battle was mostly Ahsoka vs Seventh Sister.

EGP Website Review Image 208

As with most episodes, the humour in Rebels was handled really well in this episode. The highlights include Ezra eavesdropping on Ahsoka and Kanan’s conversation and Ezra and Zeb’s arguments on what to do with the Ithorian baby.

In a (moderate?) cliff-hanger ending, both Seventh Sister and Fifth Brother find their ships destroyed but a Probe Droid (planted by Seventh Sister) plays back a recording of Ezra’s voice which gives away the location of the rebels as being on Garel. We can expect a visit from both Inquisitors to Garel very soon…

EGP Website Review Image 209

In my opinion, this was another excellent episode of Star Wars: Rebels. The similar plot-line to “Children of the Force” was an interesting concept to use in Rebels as well, with the confrontation between Ahsoka and Fifth Brother/Seventh Sister being a highlight of the episode. However, I would’ve liked their battle to be longer. The ending with Fifth Brother and Seventh Sister learning that the rebels are on Garel is going to lead to something major happening in upcoming episodes…

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D Episode Review- “Closure”

EGP Website Review Image 204

The latest episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D deals a crippling blow to the ATCU with the deaths of Rosalind Price and Luther Banks as Phil Coulson, Leo Fitz and Grant Ward end up in the other world.

I have to confess, I’m surprised and saddened that the writers decided to kill Rosalind Price so soon. I believed she could easily become an integral part of the show and her dynamic with Coulson has been one of the highlights of the season, but I trust that the writers knew what they were doing when they made the decision to kill her off. While not as important a character, I hoped Price’s death would give Banks a chance to shine (other than his small appearances so far) but he was also killed off in this episode. It’ll be interesting to see if the ATCU stays an important part of the show following their deaths.

With the passing of two characters comes the debut of another- Thomas Ward, the other brother of Grant Ward, is finally introduced in the present day as an adult (having only previously being seen in flashbacks as a young boy) and it was really interesting to watch his involvement in the episode.

EGP Website Review Image 205

Speaking of the Ward’s, if there was any doubt that Grant Ward was bad then this episode completely proved that he is evil. His murder of Rosalind Price and casual phone call to Coulson in the immediate aftermath showed how dark his path is. However, we do see that he still has a soft side with how he reacts to learning that S.H.I.E.L.D has Thomas.

Speculation: Even though Grant Ward is a main character he has had an extra-large amount of screen-time this season. Am I the only one who believes that the writers will be killing him off very soon?

The capture of Fitz and Simmons by HYDRA was handled really well, as were the torture scenes and Fitz’s subsequent decision to go back to the other world. The set-up so that Grant Ward would lead HYDRA on the other world was also handled well and Phil Coulson following them into the other world was clever.

On the subject of Coulson, it’s interesting to watch Coulson being really angry and upset at Price’s death (reminiscent how Lance Hunter felt after Grant hurt Bobbi Morse). It’s like we’re watching a new side of Coulson and the throwbacks to the shows first season (with Coulson interviewing the members of his original team) were also a nice touch to the episode.

EGP Website Review Image 206

In my opinion, this was another excellent episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The deaths of Rosalind Price and Banks were both surprise twists and the introduction an adult Thomas Ward was a nice addition to the episode. It was interesting to see Coulson in a new way and it’ll be interesting to see what events transpire on the other world with Coulson, Ward and Fitz there.

The Walking Dead Episode Review- “Start to Finish”

EGP Website Review Image 201

The latest episode of The Walking Dead sees the Alexandria Safe-Zone come under siege from the undead and the death of the Safe-Zone’s leader Deanna Monroe.

I have to be honest, I was a little disappointed in this episode. It’s a good mid-season finale but it could’ve been a lot better. It tried to include too much and I feel like that’s what let the episode down (which also leads into my complaint about the cliff-hanger which will come later in the review).

The decision to end an episode on a cliff-hanger is always a risky decision because of how fans may react, but unlike previous cliff-hangers which worked really well in the past (like the Season 4 finale at Terminus) I felt as if this cliff-hanger was forced upon fans at (arguably) the most critical moment of the episode. That said, the timing was still clever with the Walker sounds being made in pitch black, but I understand why a number of fans are unhappy with the cliff-hanger. I feel like the writers ended up having to do the cliff-hanger where they did because of how many other story elements were included in this episode, but that’s just my opinion.

EGP Website Review Image 203

That said, I think the cliff-hanger will instantly be forgotten when the show returns in February as we see the result of Sam calling out to Jessie (the comic fans should be able to make an educated guess).

However, the death of Safe-Zone leader Deanna Monroe was handled really well in this episode. I really liked how she got to have some heartfelt scenes (with both Rick and Michonne respectively) before she died, but also because she was able to choose to go out on her own terms by shooting at Walkers invading the house (we can presume she was devoured off-screen). As sad as Deanna’s death is, it was to be expected following Deanna giving Rick a larger leadership role a few episodes ago.

The idea of using Walker guts to get through Walkers has been used numerous times in the show, yet continues to be interesting to watch even after we’ve seen it several times and this episode is no exception to that.

We also see relations with Morgan Jones and Carol come to a head after Carol discovers that the Wolf Leader is still alive. Both Morgan and Carol are knocked unconscious as The Wolf escapes, though with all of the Walkers in Alexandria we’re left to question if he’ll even make it very far.

EGP Website Review Image 202

The episode also includes a post-credits scene where Daryl Dixon, Abraham Ford and Sasha (still on their way back to Alexandria) are stopped by a group of bikers. One of the bikers declares that everything they own now belongs to Negan.

In my opinion, this was a solid mid-season finale for The Walking Dead. While not particularly outstanding in my opinion, it does a good job of showing how quickly the Alexandria Safe-Zone has fallen. The death of Deanna Monroe was handled well and will be a crippling blow to the residents. I felt that the cliff-hanger was forced into the episode, but the post-credits scene with The Saviours teases at exciting things to come on The Walking Dead.

My rating: 7.5/10

Fun fact: The episode reveals that the character who said “help” at the end of “Always Accountable” was Eugene Porter.

Doctor Who Episode Review- “Heaven Sent”

EGP Website Review Image 198

The latest episode of Doctor Who sees The Doctor struggle to get over the death of companion Clara Oswald and he finds his way back to Gallifrey.

In my opinion, Peter Capaldi has shown time and again in Series 9 that he is perfect as The Doctor. I’ve said it before (and hopefully this is the last time I’ll say it), while I thought the previous series was mostly good I think this series has been stepped up hugely, with Capaldi’s performances being a major reason for that as his performance consistently gets better with every episode.

This episode uses very few cast members, with only Peter Capaldi (The Doctor), Jenna Coleman (Clara Oswald) and Jami Reed- Quarrell (Veil) getting credited for their roles. The episode is almost entirely led by Capaldi, but with the exceptional performance he gives in this episode it doesn’t get old watching The Doctor being in every scene of the episode.

Following the death of Clara in the previous episode, it’s really sad watching The Doctor struggle while mourning and grieving over her death (though he continues to act like he’s having conversations with her) and having flashbacks of her death. Even if you weren’t a fan of Clara (though she was one of my companions) you would feel sad because of how brilliantly Capaldi portrays The Doctor’s emotions in this episode.

While the episode is outstanding and tells a good story, while also arguably having one of Capaldi’s best performances as The Doctor to date, the episode is very complex and I feel maybe went a bit too far with the complexity as far as the younger viewers are concerned. While I understood what was happening, I did feel that the plot became very complex and that younger viewers may have had a hard time keeping up (especially in regard to all of the years passing). However, the story-line regarding The Hybrid (which makes me think back to the Series 9 premier) was handled really well and led to an interesting conclusion at the end of the episode (which can be read below). We also learn that The Doctor had been trapped inside his confessional dial (a recurring item in this series) the entire time.

The episode ends with The Doctor having made his way back to Gallifrey, acknowledging that he is The Hybrid.

EGP Website Review Image 200

In my opinion, this was another excellent episode of Doctor Who. This episode is one of Peter Capaldi’s best performances as The Doctor so far and the episode is almost single-handedly run by him. The conclusion of the episode with The Doctor’s return to Gallifrey, the acknowledgement that he is The Hybrid and that he had been trapped inside his confession dial were all surprise twists.

Pokémon XY Episode Review- “Tag Team Battle Inspiration!”

EGP Website Review Image 195

The latest episode of Pokémon XY sees Ash, Serena, Clemont and Bonnie arrive in Anistar City and features the return of Tierno and Shauna.

First and foremost, it was great to see the return of Tierno and Shauna again. The summer camp episodes are among my favourite episodes in the XY series and it was nice to see two of the supporting characters from that arc return again (Trevor only makes a cameo appearance and isn’t with the group). Both had returned in separate episodes following the summer camp but in this episode they both feature again, while we see that Tierno’s Wartortle and Shauna’s Bulbasaur have evolved into Blastoise and Ivysaur respectively.

The highlight of this episode was the tag battle with Ash/Tierno against the team of Serena/Shauna, which featured Serena’s Eevee in a battle for the first time (Eevee did get a fair amount of screen-time in this episode). The tag battle was action-packed and enthralling to watch, but ends up being called off when Serena has an idea for her next showcase. I suspect that we’ll see some interesting moments with Eevee in upcoming episodes given the spotlight that was put on it in this episode.

EGP Website Review Image 196

While the episode is mostly serious, there are a couple of really funny scenes with Serena that stood out to me. The scene where Tierno greets her is really amusing and we learn that Shauna is the latest person to figure out that Serena has a crush on Ash (leading to some hilarious dialogue that leaves Ash totally perplexed). I wonder if Bonnie and Shauna will talk about the crush at some point? They both know Serena has strong feelings for Ash.

The next episodes (just like this one) are going to be major following the group’s arrival in Anistar City- where Ash will challenge the seventh gym leader in Kalos and Serena’s next Pokémon Showcase, but this week’s episode was a really good introduction to Anistar City.

EGP Website Review Image 197

The episode ends on a funny note as the group realises the following day that they’ve woken up late. Will they be able to register for the showcase in time? The writers are making us wait to find out the answer…

In my opinion, this was another excellent episode of Pokémon XY. The tag battle was a highlight of the episode and the humour was handled really well in this episode. In terms of important events, it was great to see Ash and co. reach Anistar City and see the return of Tierno and Shauna.

Report: Spider-Man Film to Shoot in Atlanta

EGP Website Article Image 810

Tom Holland, who will play Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has confirmed that his untitled Spider-Man solo film is another Marvel film that will be shooting in Atlanta.

Holland filmed his first scenes as Spider-Man in Atlanta for Captain America: Civil War. He is quoted as saying the following:

“We’re shooting in Atlanta for most of it, because they have studios there and I think it’s cheaper to build a New York set than it is to shoot here, because it’s going to be very expensive. We probably will end up here (in New York) for one week or two.”

Aside from its humour, Marvel is also known for notoriously breaking the trend of secret identities in superhero films. However, Holland has shared that Spider-Man will still have a secret identity in his films. He is quoted as saying the following:

“I think one of the most interesting things about Peter Parker for us is that he’s the only person in the MCU now that has a secret identity, so we all know who everyone else is. I think it’s quite interesting to go back to that hiding behind a mask.”

Tom Holland’s first Spider-Man solo film is scheduled for release on July 28th, 2017.

Report- More of The Winter Soldier’s Backstory to be Included in Captain America Civil War

EGP Website Article Image 809

Sebastian Stan, who starred as Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier in the previous Captain America films, has confirmed that more of The Winter Soldier’s backstory will be included in next years’ Captain America: Civil War.

Stan is quoted as saying the following:

“Where we find him after Winter Soldier, he’s in a place where he is learning about himself.  And he’s discovering  — as you saw in the last scene of The Winter Soldier, at the museum — he’s starting to put the pieces together, starting to learn about the past. Where he’s been. What he’s done. And as you’ll see in the next movie, it doesn’t come without a huge price: emotionally, mentally and uh… Yeah, it’s not easy for him to learn about what he’s done.”

Stan also had the following to add on Bucky’s relationship with Hydra:

“You gotta remember it is the same Hydra in a sense that is responsible for him still being alive. And what happened before the movie Winter Soldier — and there will be a lot of things sort of made more clear in Civil War about what happened with him — kind of setup this relationship that that he may always have with Hydra, one way or another. Because in a way they are like his second family. If that makes sense.”

Thoughts on this report? Are you looking forward to seeing more of The Winter Soldier in Captain America: Civil War?
